1.3 Steering

The rack and pinion steering gear is located behind the engine and the transaxle. This location protects the steering gear from weather and from damage in all but the most severe collisions. Neither the steering gear nor the tie rod ends require lubrication during their normal service lives. Although there is an adjusting screw on the steering gear, adjustment is not necessary unless the steering either rattles, or is stiff and does not self-center. On some models, the steering gear is power-assisted to reduce steering effort.
