5.4 Testing Oxygen Sensor System (CIS-E Motronic)

With CIS-E Motronic fuel injection, the Motronic control unit operates the oxygen sensor system in addition to the other CIS-E Motronic functions. The signal from the oxygen sensor is just one of many inputs the control unit receives and processes in order to properly control the air/fuel mixture.

The CIS-E Motronic engine management system features built-in electronic fault diagnosis which detects faults in the system during normal operation. Problems with the oxygen sensor or the Motronic control unit response to the oxygen sensor signal are stored in the fault memory of the CIS-E Motronic control unit. Any troubleshooting should always begin by reading out the fault codes as described in FUEL SYSTEM-GASOLINE. The codes will then help determine which component or function of the system needs to be checked.
