5. Fuel Injection

This section covers adjustments and repairs to the diesel and turbo diesel fuel injection systems, including the injection pump and related parts, the camshaft drive belt, and the fuel injectors. Adjustments or repairs to the injection system are similar for all model years covered by this manual. 1986 and later injection pumps feature an additional idle speed boost system. All turbo diesel injection pumps employ a boost pressure enrichment feature.

Adjustments to the diesel engine's fuel injection system should be made carefully. Haphazard adjustments may not improve engine operation, and can cause serious engine and fuel injection trouble. Cleanliness is especially important. Always clean fuel unions before removing lines, and use lint-free cloths. If you lack the skills or the correct tools and instruments for adjusting the diesel engine's fuel injection, we suggest that you leave these sensitive adjustments to an authorized dealer or other qualified and properly equipped shop.
