6.1 Air Flow Measurement and Fuel MeteringThe throttle valve is operated directly by the accelerator cable. It regulates the amount of air drawn in by the engine. The most basic function of the fuel injection system is to measure that incoming air and precisely meter a proportional amount of fuel to create the proper air/fuel mixture. The basic air flow measurement and fuel metering components are the air flow sensor and the fuel distributor. The closed position of the throttle valve is factory-adjusted and does not require routine adjustment. It should never be altered to adjust idle speed. Throttle valve basic adjustment, described below, should be performed only if the factory adjustment has been changed for some reason. The air flow sensor plate can be adjusted if it is found to be out of alignment. After any adjustment, the idle mixture (% CO) adjustment will need to be checked. The fuel distributor is precisely calibrated during manufacture and cannot be adjusted or repaired. |
