Adjusting Shift Lock Solenoid

(with automatic shift lock only)

The operation of the shift lock is shown in Fig. 4-10. The shift lock is engaged when the relay actuates the shift lock solenoid. The solenoid moves the shift lock plate to lock the selector lever pushrod in place. This prevents moving the selector lever from its selected position.

The shift lock solenoid is mounted in slotted holes and its position is adjustable. Disconnect the harness connector and adjust when the solenoid is not actuated. Loosen the solenoid mounting screws and position the solenoid as necessary. The correct adjustment is illustrated in Fig. 4-11. Following the adjustment, check operation of the shift lock in Park and Neutral, and operation of the selector lever in all positions.

Fig. 4-10. With shift lock engaged (A), solenoid actuates to extend the shift lock plate. Plate prevents movement of selector lever pushrod. With shift lock disengaged by signal from brakes (B), the system relay releases the solenoid, allowing the shift lock plate to retract and the pushrod to move.

WARNING-

Always use Volkswagen Part No. AMV 200 000 thread locking compound or equivalent when reinstalling the solenoid mounting screws.
